Américo Santiago and Yolanda Castillo founded the CT Hispanic Democratic Caucus in the summer of 2003 and unveiled the organization with a mission statement in the fall of 2003. From its very inception our mission has been clear: To promote the political empowerment amongst Latinos throughout the State of Connecticut.
Life changed dramatically in 2003-2004, creating political equity by electing Latinos and Latinas to office at both the local and state level. Over time, CHDC realized that we could maximize our political and social impact, addressing the needs of our community and changing the course of the conversation by expanding our mission to better the communities where we live, and thus improve the future of those communities.
CHDC Mission
CHDC is a grassroots statewide political organization that has fostered significant efforts to support candidates for constitutional office, and municipal boards and commissions that reflects our demographic, diversity and values.
CHDC aims to ensure that our local government is reflective of the people they represent, and that they are advancing an agenda that centers around the working class, the immigrant community, diversity, education, veterans, LGBTQ community and the continued effort to elect Latinos to office.
